Good start, but not a great one

The 2023 Chargers have had quite an interesting start to the season. 4 games in and I think we have yet to play our best game yet. In weeks 1 and 2, we beat our opponents by a combined score of 64-10. In week 3, we gave up 59 points in our lone loss against the dominant New England Patriots. We bounced back with our second win over a the Las Vegas Raiders this season, giving us a solid start in the fight for the AFC West. Our defense has been led by Derwin James Jr., Montae Nicholson and Kenneth Murray who have combined for 12 Interceptions and 3 Touchdowns on the defensive side of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, Justin Herbert has struggled to get going in the first 4 games of the season, rocking a 75% completion percentage for 977 yards, only 3 touchdowns compared to 7 interceptions. While Herbert has had a slow start, Austin Ekeler looks to carry the offense with his speed and elusiveness. Through the first quarter of the season, he’s racked up 484 yards and 8 touchdowns. But it doesn’t stop there. As much of a threat as he is in the run game, he’s also proved to be quite the threat in the passing game being Herbert’s second favorite target behind the speedy Rico Gafford. It’s obvious that this Chargers team is carried by its defense and run game. If they can control the speed of the game and limit their mistakes, they look to be a tough team coming out of the AFC West.

Looking ahead to the next 4 weeks, we’ll have several challenges in our wake. Next week we play the winless Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional game. While watching them the past few weeks, it may be easy to overlook them, but the speed and explosiveness of this offense can not be underestimated. It’s essential this Chargers team moves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the division to make a push for a high seed in the playoffs.

After the Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champion Buffalo Bills travel to the beautiful and brand new SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and boy are they going to be a challenge. Leading the league in points scored on offense and having the 3rd scoring defense in the league, it is essential we control the game early and not turn the ball over. Containing Henry Ruggs and limiting hit sticks from Tremaine Edmunds and Anfernee Orji may just determine the result of this game. Beating the Buffalo Bills early in the season would be an incredible confidence boost and would allow us to control our own destiny in Season 4 of the Premier Madden League.

After the matchup with the reigning Super Bowl Champs, we face a dangerous 1-2 Chicago Bears team. While 1-2 may not be the most intimidating record, his opponent’s record in his 2 losses is 5-1. IF the Chargers escape the Showdown in Sofi with a win, we must stay focused to not have a let down game at Soldier Field in Chicago. While hopes will be high and confidence will be soaring, no opponent in PML should be overlooked. Allen Robinson is a top 10 receiver in the league and the speedy combo of Tevin Coleman and Tarik Cohen are going to give this Chargers’ defense all they can handle.

In week 8, we will go into our bye week and have a midseason update. If all goes according to plan, I’ll see you then at 6-1. Realistically though, I think I’ll be 5-2 going into our bye week with a solid lead in the AFC West and a disappointing loss to the Bills in Week 6. Until then, we’re keeping our head down in the general chat and hoping Drama doesn’t shit on me too much for almost letting Natural drop a 60 bomb on my head.
