Colts Playoff Chances Dwindle Again

With almost every team around them in the wild card race losing, the Colts were in a prime position to pick up ground in the wildcard race but shots themselves in the foot. They took an awful loss to the Niners, in a game they led almost in it’s entirety. The defense forced 4 turnovers and played lights out for the first half but then could not contain the dink and dunk offensive attack in the second half. The Niners had just one deep pass connection all game and everything else past 10 yards of the line of scrimmage seemed to be intercepted but they just could not stop the short game all second half. This kept drives alive and ate away at the clock which ultimately became an enemy of the Colts. They had a chance to win the game down 21-17 the Colts had the ball and were driving the field on what they hoped would be the last possession of the game. Jameis Winston looked to hit Parris Campbell on a skinny post route and looked to have plenty of space to fit it in but threw the ball way to low and was picked off by a jumping linebacker who returned the ball for a score to end the game. The Colts offense was stagnant most of the game as Trey Burton had 3 drive killing drops on third downs. He has been sure handed all year so to see that was awfully surprising. The drive before the Niners took the lead, Indy looked to move the ball and score again to put the game away and had Burton on a corner route on third and 7 which was dropped to end the drive and ultimately helped the Niners take the lead. The Star of the game for either side was Cornerback Desmond Trufant who had three interceptions including a sliding 1 handed pick on the sidelines. In the end it wasn’t enough to help the colts get over the hump. Indy now sits at 5-7 and two games out of a playoff spot with just 4 games remaining. Not mathematically eliminated from playoff contention this team needs to win out and have help from others around, not the best situation to be in. There have been rumors of the younger players on the team getting more snaps if they fall out of playoff contention. Wide receiver Shi Smith has been excellent in practice all year but hasn’t made an impact in a game yet, look for him to be one of the guys they look to get in the games to see if he can be a true factor for the team moving forward. Up next are two divisional games against the Titans and Texans who are both fighting for playoffs and seeding. The Colts have a perfect opportunity to play spoiler for their division mates while still trying to make a final late push into the playoffs.
