After a disappointing tie, the Eagles come into week 3 looking for their first win of the season. This is a proud organization who isn’t used to losing and word from the locker room is that if the losing keeps up we could see a major trade occur. Week 3 saw the Eagles take on the defeated Bengals team who was looking for its first win. The Bengals came out instantly looking to use wide receiver Ross’s speed, however, that was put to an immediate stop by the Eagle defense. The Eagles went in a different direction in this game in an attempt to limit the turnovers from weeks prior. They went to a run first approach and it had major success. The Bengals couldn’t stop Sanders at all which led to the Eagles taking a huge lead then riding that lead all the way until the end, securing their first victory of the season. When asked about the win coach Skellington said, “It’s nice to finally have the monkey off our back, but it’s time to catch up with the rest of the division.”
After throwing over a dozen interceptions in his first two games of the season, Carson Wentz was perfect in this game. He ended the game 11/13 with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He wasn’t asked to throw much in the game, but when he did, he was precise. Wentz’s favorite target was wide receiver Goodwin who had an outstanding day coming down with 3 touchdowns on 5 catches. The man of the hour and workhorse for this game was Miles Sanders. Sanders ran for 134 and 2 touchdowns on 21 attempts. This is the kind of balanced running attack that Coach Skellington is looking for and you can bet that this game plan will be used going forward.
The Eagles defense showed how good they can be when everything is going right. It is a hard task to stop one of the fastest receivers in the game but that is exactly what was done. Ross was held to just 1 catch for 19 yards. In fact, the entire passing game for the Bengals was held to less than 150 yards. Corner back Maddox was the star of the defense this week, securing two interceptions. He shadowed Ross for the most of the game and performed admirably. The strength of the Eagles defense was only able to generate one sack this week, which if it continues will be a cause of concern for this team.
With the relief of their first win of the season out of the way, the Eagles look towards their week 4 game when they face a 49er team that has been plagued by injuries. On paper these two teams are pretty evenly matched but the main aspect to look out for will be the Eagles offensive line vs the 49er defense line, as whichever line comes away unscathed will ensure victory for their team.
